Steuben, N.Y. – Firefighters responding to a house fire in rural Oneida County early Monday morning found two people dead inside the home, according to a Facebook post from the Barneveld Fire Department.

Holland Patent Fire District was the first to arrive on-scene to the structure on Fraser Road in the Town of Steuben, but Barneveld, Stittville and Floyd departments also were called to the scene to help fight the fire, according to the Facebook post.

The fire was so severe and the building so unstable that firefighters had to try to extinguish the fire from outside. Once they were able to enter the house, they found that two people inside had died, the Facebook post said.

“A hard fought house fire with an outcome that no department likes,” the Holland Patent department wrote on its own Facebook page.

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is investigating.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released.
