Two Dozen Patients Hospitalized After Fire at RI Rehab Facility

According to a report from NYPost, at least 24 patients at the Genesis Respiratory and Rehabilitation Center in Coventry, Rhode Island, were hospitalized Thursday night after a fire erupted on the third floor of the facility.

The fire was reported at about 9 p.m. and was confined to one room, said Coventry Fire Department (CFD) officials.

The facility’s sprinkler system helped extinguish the flames, but smoke continued to spread throughout the entire facility.

The facility, which can house up to 100 people, were forced to relocate because of damage sustained, said CFD Chief Frank Brown.

Ambulances from at least four other departments also responded to the scene to provide mutual aid.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The fire occurs several days after another fire in a Pawtucket apartment complex left one person dead and several others injured.
