Hackensack (NJ) – A two-alarm high-rise fire left two with smoke inhalation Tuesday morning, a fire official said.

The fire started in an air-conditioning unit in an apartment on the 23rd floor of 160 Overlook Avenue in Hackensack. The doorman called 911 to report the fire about 3:45 a.m., said Fire Department Lieutenant Justin Derevyanik.

Two residents escaped the burning apartment after being woken up by smoke alarms. Firefighters found them in a stairwell on the 21st floor. The residents, a man and a woman, were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for smoke inhalation, and are expected to recover.
