Two in Custody After Barricading Burning San Antonio Motel Room

Two men were taken into custody and one firefighter was hospitalized following a fire at a motel on the Northeast Side, reports mysanantonio.com

San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood said 36 units responded to the Super 8 Motel in the 11000 block of Interstate 35 North around 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports that indicated people may have been barricaded inside a burning room.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had completely gutted the room, and smoke was beginning to spread through the building.

Firefighters had trouble accessing the room because furniture had been stacked against the door preventing entry.

Hood said it appears as though the men exited the room after intentionally igniting the fire.

Witnesses reported seeing the men running from the scene and police officers nearby took him into custody.

Interstate 35 southbound access road at Weidner Road was shut down while arson investigators work the scene.

One firefighter received minor burns and was transported to an area hospital.
