Two Killed in Chicago Basement Fire

Two people are dead after an apartment fire early Friday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to police and fire officials.

A fire broke out in a basement the 1400 block of West Garfield Boulevard about 5:45 a.m. Friday, according to police. Two adults, a man and a woman, were taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center where they were later pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The woman is in her 50s, the man in his 60s, Fire Department officials said.

The fire was struck out and two others in the building were also displaced.

Chicago fire officials said there were working smoke detectors at the scene of the fire and the cause is under investigation.
