Two men, including a local artist, died in a three-alarm fire at two West Oakland apartment buildings early Saturday, reports sfgate.com (http://bit.ly/1HlSA1l)
Firefighters responded to the scene about 3 a.m. and found smoke coming out of an apartment in the two-story brick building on the 600 block of 24th Street, said Geoff Hunter, battalion chief for the Oakland Fire Department.
Crews on scene began attacking the fire and called for more personnel to assist, he said. The building was previously an armory that had been split into two separate apartment buildings, with one of them located on the 600 block of 23rd Street. The fire spread from the apartment in the 24th Street structure to several apartments in the 23rd Street building, he said.
