Two Missing, ME Firefighter Hurt in Violent ME Hotel Fire

According to a report from WMUR, a fire that burned at a Kittery, Maine, Days Inn on the Route 1 bypass reached five alarms, leaving fire crews looking for two missing persons.

Kittery Fire Department Chief David O’Brien said that just after 3 p.m., at least one person was not accounted for, and crews were searching for one more.

Two people, including a firefighter, were treated for injuries on scene.

The structure partially collapsed just before 2 p.m. and is now considered a total loss.

Around 2,000 customers in Kittery and another 1,000 customers in Eliot suffered power outages after the fire, and a gymnasium next door had to be evacuated. Heavy wind gusts ignited a separate brush fire behind the hotel on Old Post Road.

Kittery town officials said the southbound side of the Route 1 bypass was closed off after the firefight began, and traffic was rerouted to Ranger Drive. Authorities also closed the Sarah Long Bridge at the time of the fire, but it has since been reopened.
