Two NYPD police officers have been critically injured while responding to a fire in a Coney Island high-rise apartment, reports WABC New York.
The FDNY received the initial call at 12:28 p.m. of a 13th floor apartment fire in the 18 story building at 2007 Surf Avenue.
Authorities say the officers used an elevator to get up to the fire floors but the elevator stopped and they suffered severe smoke inhalation.
A female officer was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, while a male officer was taken to Jacoby Hospital.
One officer was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, while the other was transported to Coney Island Hospital.
Two firefighters and two civilians suffered minor injuries.
