U.S. Forest Service Firefighter Dies Responding to Wildland Fire

A United States Forest Service firefighter died Sunday while responding to the Steep Corner fire near Orofino, Idaho.

According to a report from the Missoulian (http://bit.ly/Oe8tJO), the victim was a Forest Service firefighter responding to a wildfire near Aquarius campground on the North Fork Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater national forests.

The female firefighter was an employee of the Nez Perce-Clearwater forest, said Elizabeth Slown, an information officer for the agency in Missoula. She was not burned, although Slown did not have other details about the fire or the accident.

The firefighter’s name was not released, pending notification of family. Slown said additional details on the firefighter and the accident likely would be available on Monday.

UPDATE: The Washington Post reports that the name of the firefighter as Anne Veseth, 20, who was killed after she was struck by a falling tree while working on a fire.

The incident is under investigation. Veseth, of Moscow, Idaho, was in her second season working as a firefighter. Her older brother is a wildland firefighter in Idaho.
