Valor award nominations due from chiefs by July 1

Nominations are being accepted for the International Benjamin Franklin Fire Service Award for Valor, an annual award honoring a firefighter whose heroic actions have saved a life.

All firefighters, whether volunteer or paid, are eligible for the award; the incident may have occurred while the firefighter was either on or off duty. Nominations are made by the firefighter’s chief, who supplies details about the incident. The deadline for applications is July 1.

The award is cosponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Motorola, Inc.—Communications Sector. A special IAFC committee, which includes chiefs from around the country, reviews nominations and makes the final selection. Judges will consider personal effort and the use of available equipment and personnel in making their selection.

The award will be presented Aug. 28 at the IAFC conference in Washington, D.C. The winner’s chief receives an award for department excellence.
