Virginia Beach Mobile Home Fire Claims 2

VIRGINIA BEACH- Two men died early Friday morning when their mobile home caught fire in the 300 block of Detroiter Drive in Virginia Beach. The fire’s cause has not yet been determined.

A neighbor called 911 just after 6 a.m. and firefighters arrived within minutes. The home was fully involved by the time the first crews arrived.

Fire spokeswoman Amy Valdez says one of the victims was in his mid-30s, the other in his early 50s.

One of the men who lived in the home was handicapped, according to neighbors, who feared something would happen. “He couldn’t get out,” neighbor Chrissie Dugger said. “He would perish in a fire, as they both did.”

Marrie Willis stood helplessly as she watched her friend’s home burn.

“At first, it was white puffy smoke, and every time they were hitting down the walls, more smoke would come out,” Willis described. “It was like a nightmare, a total nightmare.”

The victim’s cat also died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point, according to Valdez, but it does not appear suspicious.

The bodies of the two men have been have been transferred to the Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification.
