Three bodies were recovered from the debris a Washougal (WA) house fire that firefighters were unable to extinguish because of gunfire emanating from the home.
The incident occurred on December 5. The home’s owner was under investigation for sex crimes and was due to turn himself in the following day. The man, his wife, and her sister all died in the incident, although police say the female victims were likely shot to death prior to the fire. During the fire, authorities say a man inside the structure fired shots, preventing neighbors, firefighters and police from helping, according to an Associated Press report on bendbulletin.com (http://bit.ly/t6x75m).
This incident underscores the many variables firefighters may encounter when responding to fire calls. In this case, the fire was but one element in a multiagency response that stemmed from other suspected criminal activity and escalated.
