On December 24, an alert Yakima (WA) firefighter‘s actions saved the life of a newborn baby who had been left in the vicinity of a city fire station.

According to a post on the City of Yakima Fire Department Facebook page, at around 6 a.m. at Station 92, Firefighter Joanna Albrecht began her early morning workout when she heard what appeared to be crying coming from outside the station. “That is a strange time and place to change a diaper,” Albrecht thought. She went to a rarely used side door and found a cardboard apple box, which contained a baby girl wrapped in towels and crying.

Albrecht found no one around, brought the baby inside, and activated an alarm to get an ambulance and police units to get the baby to the hospital.

It appears the baby had been left outside for at least an hour and was cold. Her umbilical cord was clamped with a bobby pin. The crew went into action, checked the baby’s vitals, cleaned her up, and began warming her in dry warm towels until the ambulance arrived. The baby was transported to a local hospital and is in good condition.

“We got real lucky on this one,” said Yakima Fire Capt. Alex Langbell. “The baby was left on the backside of the station that doesn’t get any foot traffic. The temps here are in the teens to 20s, with lots of snow as of late. It’s honestly a miracle that baby didn’t die.”
