Wallington (NJ) – Veteran Firefighter Gregory Barnas died after falling from a roof at an early morning fire.
The 57-year-old career captain with the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department and former chief of the Wallington (NJ) Fire Department was cutting a hole in the roof of a restaurant when the fall occurred. Barnas joined the Wallington (NJ) Fire Department in 1972. He served the department as chief in 1997. Barnas was a 29-year veteran of the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department where he held the rank of captain. He leaves behind his wife and two sons, both also firefighters. Both sons were also on scene at the fire.
After the fall, Barnas was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. It is unclear what led to Barnas falling, and the incident remains under investigation.
