Warehouse at Iowa State Fairgrounds Destroyed After Fire

According to a report from WHO13, the Des Moines (IA) Fire Department (DMFD) was dispatched to the Iowa State Fairgrounds at around 2:30 a.m. after the Campbell’s Concessions warehouse, located east of the John and Emily Putney Family Cattle Barn and north of the Oman Family Youth Inn, erupted in flames.

DMFD Firefighter Ahman Douglass said crews arrived to the structure off Dean Avenue around 2:30 a.m. after a report of smoke in the area was called in. Even before firefighters left the station, the call was upgraded to a working fire.

Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames shooting from structure; they then used an aerial to shoot water down onto the building from above.

Douglass said the building is a total loss, but minimal damage to some nearby trailers.

No injuries have been reported. DMFD members remain on scene to monitor and extinguish hot spots.

Because the Iowa State Fairgrounds as well as the fair itself does not employ its own fire department, the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office will take over the investigation.
