At least two family dogs were saved by firefighters during a raging fire at a West Hempstead (NY) home on Tuesday morning, January 22.

The alarm came in around 9:40 a.m. for a house fire at 427 Cedar Street near Mulberry Lane. Strong winds were blowing and temperatures were still frigid, which hampered fire operations.

Flames had engulfed the two-story home but all of the occupants were able to escape to safety. Units were advised on arrival that several family pets were still inside the burning home.

After a short search, two large dogs were located and brought outside. The dogs were transported to an area animal center for evaluation. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported at the scene.
