Wichita Firefighters Call for Chief to Resign

Wichita firefighters have called for their chief to step down in a “no confidence” vote for Chief Ron Blackwell and other top brass, reports KWCH 12 Eyewitness News (http://bit.ly/KvYDmo). The numbers were very high in favor for resignation–94 percent for Blackwell to step down and 97 percent for Deputy Chief Ron Aaron and Division Chief of Training Billy Wenzel.

The news outlet reports that discontent has been brewing for years and that a major factor cited by Union president Matt Schulte is “misplaced budget priorities.” Since 2008, deputy and division chiefs have had pay increases from 20-30 percent, while the rank and file firefighters have had no raises.

Confidence was further impacted when errors in the promotional process caused several firefighters to receive incorrect scores.
