A Williamsburg Township firefighter died Friday night after he suffered a sudden cardiac event during a house fire in Mt. Orab on Saturday, reports cincinnati.com.
“It is with great sorrow that we announce that Lieutenant David Knapke has passed away,” said the fire department in a Facebook post. “Please keep his family and WTES in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Williamsburg Township Emergency Services confirmed that Knapke, 55, was moved to Hospice of Cincinnati on Friday “according to David’s wishes, and the agreement of the family.”
“Treatment and test results have revealed brain damage which is incompatible with David’s wishes for life,” Capt. Daniel Bainum stated in a press release.
Knapke had to be resuscitated at the scene of the fire in Brown County and was flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, emergency workers reported.
Investigators from Mt. Orab are not yet sure what caused the fire — which resulted in a total loss of the house — but said that Knapke was not hurt by the fire.
