Woman Charged in Two-Alarm Houston Apartment Fire

A 36-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a two-alarm apartment fire that injured one person overnight, reports khou.com.

Laurie A. Tate has been charged with felony first-degree arson, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. at the Charleston Manor Condos on Sandpiper.

Firefighters battled heavy flames and smoke coming from a two-story building. The building is likely a complete loss with several condos damaged.

One of the residents said neighbors alerted him to the fire by throwing rocks at his upstairs window.

“I heard some sparkling sound. And then I looked out the window and it was all orange with fire,” said Sherman Chan, a resident. “I just picked up my stuff and run. I’m lucky to be alive.”

People sprung into action, trying to get each other to safety.

“I think people were trying to throw rocks at my window,” said Chan.

One man had to rush to get his handicapped friend out of his house.

“I got my daughter out of the bed and woke her up. And then I got my friend in the wheelchair. I came outside and that was on fire. And I got him and helped him get downstairs because he is on a wheelchair and he has one leg,” said Andrew Porter, a resident.
