One woman was killed and nearly a dozen people were displaced Sunday morning after a four-alarm fire in Gardner, Massachusetts.
A neighbor managed to rescue another elderly resident from the apartment building where the deadly fire occurred. Several tenants tried unsuccessfully to access the apartment where the woman was trapped, according to a report from The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/wqAp2e).
The building did not have sprinklers because it was built before they were required, but it had working smoke detectors, a fire official told the paper. Firefighters operated in frigid temperatures for about four hours to extinguish the early-morning fire, which caused the three-story apartment building’s roof to collapse.
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath.
