A woman was killed and two boys were critically injured when their minivan was struck by a train this morning on the south side of Chicago, Illinois.
The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/QPyVtF) that the driver went around railway crossing gates and was hit by a Metra Rock Island train.
One woman inside the minivan was dead at the scene, and two children were taken in serious-to-critical condition to a local medical facility, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva.
A rail line spokesperson said that, according to reports from both witnesses and the train’s engineer, the minivan drove around the gates before the accident. She said the train was likely moving at about its highest speed, 79 miles per hour, and that there was no way that it could have stopped before hitting the car.
