WV Air National Guard Senior Airman/Firefighter Killed in Barn Fire

A firefighter with the West Virginia Air National Guard was killed while operating at a barn fire in late December that was later determined to be arson, according to a report from the U.S. Fire Administration.

On Sunday, December 27, 2020, at approximately 0200hrs, Senior Airman/Firefighter Logan Young of 167th Air Lift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard Fire Department responded to a mutual aid call, to a barn fire in Kearneysville, West Virginia. Senior Airman/Firefighter Young was killed while battling the fire when a beam fell on him. The cause of the fire has been determined as arson and is under investigation.

Senior Airman/Firefighter Young was 30 years old. According to a report from the West Virginia National Guard, he joined the West Virginia Air National Guard in 2018 and served as a fire fighter in the 167th Civil Engineer Squadron. He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 2011 and served on active duty in the security forces (military police) career field before transitioning into the WVANG. He was employed full time at the 167th Airlift Wing as a Military Authority Fire Fighter. He was a combat veteran and had previously deployed to the Middle East in 2014. He was the recipient of the numerous awards and decorations to include the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was a resident of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and is survived by his mother, father, brother and fiancée.

“This is an extremely sad day for West Virginia, especially two days after Christmas,” said West Virginia Governor Jim Justice. “I ask all West Virginians to join Cathy and I in praying for Logan Young’s family and the entire West Virginia National Guard family. Logan stepped up to defend our country and protect our freedoms, and served as a first responder here at home. We owe everything we have to brave men and women like him. We will do everything we can to provide support to his family and will never forget his service and sacrifice to this great State and to our great Country.”

Senior Airman/Firefighter Logan Young’s funeral service will be Thursday, January 7, 2021.A private viewing for family will be at Omps Funeral Home, Winchester, VA, Wednesday, January 6, 2021. A public viewing will be at Victory Church, January 7, 2021, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Funeral Service starts at 4:00 p.m. at Victory Church. Victory Church address: 2870 Middle Rd., Winchester, VA. There will be a memorial service on base, March 2021.
