A basement fire quickly grew out of control heavily damaging a home near 42nd and Cold Spring Rd. this afternoon in Wynnedale, Indiana. The 14-year-old son of the homeowner arrived home from school and noticed a light haze inside the residence. He called his cousin, who is also staying at the house, to come home. The cousin, 24, arrived in about 15 minutes and the two began looking for the source of the haze. Within minutes they found fire coming up from the basement into the first floor, through the floor vents. The two fled the home and called 911.

Fifteen Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department units were dispatched along with two Pike Township fire units, as well as EMS and police. One firefighter was transported after he injured his knee, while another suffered an abrasion.
Firefighters made a quick attack on the initial body of fire, but hidden void spaces and difficult access to the attic allowed the fire to quickly communicate to the upper interior and vent itself through the roof. They would fight the blaze for the next hour and 20 minutes before bringing it under control. Fire Investigators ruled the fire accidental–electrical and want to remind residents to be careful about overloading electrical systems throughout the home…especially this time of year.
Neighbors who came to watch the firefighters effort say the house lies within the incorporated town of Wynnedale. The town was founded and incorporated in 1939 by Thomas Wynne. The 4.76 Square miles that make up the town was Wynne’s former farm. The town is bordered by 44th street to the North, 42nd street to the South, White River to the East, and Spurgeons Farm to the West. Approximately 100 homes occupy the property with a population of approximately 275 residents.
