CHICOPEE – The accidental release of a chemical Thursday morning at the Solenis plant on Grattan Street resulted in a hazardous materials emergency and sent one person to the hospital, according to a ChicOppee Fire Department official.

Lt. Katie Collins Kalbaugh said Chicopee firefighters and the District 4 Regional Hazardous Materials Team are on scene at the site.

She said she did not know what the chemical was but said first responders should be on scene for a while.

She described it as “some sort of a chemical incident.”

The incident appeared to originate with a leak in a rail car that had come onto to the property, she said.

The haz-mat team is assessing the situation, but the scene is considered safe, she said.

She did not have the status of the person who was exposed.

Western Mass News cited the plant manager Paul Nelson who said an employee was splashed with a corrosive material while unloading a rail car. The employee, he said, was wearing protective equipment and was given a chemical wash at the scene.

This is a developing story.
