The cover: Michael N. Ciampo joined the fire service as a fourth-generation volunteer firefighter in 1979. In 1985, he started his career as a firefighter with the Washington, DC, Fire Department, then moved on to the Fire Department of New York in 1990. He officially retired this summer but is a highly sought-after instructor and continues to serve as a monthly columnist and technical editor for Fire Engineering. He noticed that something was wrong with his voice and throat and made the decision to have it checked out. After numerous tests and biopsies, he was diagnosed with 9/11 illness and cancer and underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. Ciampo has become a strong advocate for preventive medical exams and cancer screenings. Not long after his retirement, he posed for this photo in his personal protective equipment while holding his self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask and his radiation mask. “If you wear your SCBA mask, hopefully you won’t have to wear the radiation mask!” Lieutenant Mike “The Champ” Ciampo continues to make a difference in this new chapter of his life.
