A $100,000 Fire

A $100,000 Fire

Labor Day here was marked by one of the most disastrous fires in several years in the heart of the main street business district. Battle Creek, Mich. The Helmer, Goodale drug store, a large wholesale and retail establishment in Main street, between Jefferson avenue and Madison street, was destroyed with a loss of $75,000, and the Preston shoe store, adjoining, was damaged to the extent of $100,000, or more, mostly by water. Damage to offices and apartments in the two blocks will tiring the loss to the $100,000 figure. The fire started at 4.30 o’clock in the morning in the Helmer, Goodale store, originating in the elevator shaft. The flames shot to the roof, and the four-story building was soon ablaze. Four engine companies responded to the first alarm, but the presence of oils, varnishes and other Combustibles prevented effective work on the part of the firemen. The fire ate its way through the whole interior, completely ruining the Helmer, Goodale stock. The firemen, by heroic work, managed to save the Preston shoe and clothing store building adjoining, after pouring tons of water into it.
