A New Fire Alarm Box.

A New Fire Alarm Box.

A new invention has been submitted to the London county council. It is a combination street alarm station for fire and police calls and other purposes, doing away with the necessity of breaking glass or running for a constable. Any person wishing to give a fire or police alarm enters the signal box and simply pulls an electric knob, the police signal being painted blue and marked boldly “ Police,” and the fire alarm red and marked “ Fire.” When inside the box he cannot use any of the pulls until he first shuts the door, and when this is done the electric pull can be freely used ; but by the very operation of one or the other of the pulls the door is automatically and secretly locked, and can neither be opened from inside or outside. Consequently the person is detained inside until the policeman or fireman on duty opens the door by means of a special key. With such an arrangement false calls are impossible without the arrest of the hoaxer.
