A PIPE GALLERY IN NEW YORK
The New York board of aldermen has appropriated $100,000 for the construction of an experimental pipe gallery in lower Broadway, to be built in conjunction with the rapid transit subway from the Post Office to the Battery, and thence to South Brooklyn. This is the first appropriation for this purpose that has been made—the original plans for pipe galleries along the entire subway system having been defeated because of its cost of about $4,000,000 and also because the officials were unable to agree upon a plan for the work. Now that the experiment is to be tried in the Broadway extension of the Brooklyn tunnel, it is believed the work will ultimately be pushed through the entire system. The board appropriated $700,000 for fire purposes in Brooklyn.
