A Practical Suggestion.

A Practical Suggestion.

To the Editor:

After reading the account of the recent Boston fire, the question should be asked, why are these buildings not connected by a system of pipes running to each story from the sidewalk, with valves properly marked showing the story ? By connecting the steamers at the sidewalk and opening the proper valve the room where the fire is could be flooded through sprinklers on the automatic principle or any sprinkler covering a large amount of surface. These pipes could be so put in, so as not to mar the beauty of the building any more than steam or other pipe, and certainly would prevent the rapidity by which the fire spreads if it would not stop it altogether.
