A WISE IMPROVEMENT.
Chicago has recently authorised the expenditure of $298,200 for the improvement of the city’s fire protection. A large portion of the money will be spent in building and equipping seventeen engine houses.
A part will also be used for new bridges, which will be of great service to the fire department, as it has frequently required a round-about trip of over a mile for engines to get across the branches of the river.
In consequence of well authenticated reports as to pollution of the Croton watershed at Katonah, N. Y., Water Commissioner Oakly, of New York city, has sent five inspectors to patrol the banks of the rivers.
