Fire fighter and fire buff readers of Newsweek were no doubt as pleased as the staff of FIRE ENGINEERING upon scanning the March 18 issue of that magazine. Subject for its Life and Leisure column of the week was Where There’s Smoke . . ., a full-page article about the pastime of buffing.
The story probed some of the reasons why over 100,000 people are fans of fire fighters and contained thumbnail sketches of several prominent buffs. Quoted authority for details in the piece was Paul Ditzel, author of FIRE ENGINEERING’S Among the Buffs column.
We were pleased to assist the editors of Newsweek in gathering material for the article. While buffing is only one sidelight of the fire protection picture, the story does indicate a greater awareness by the general public of the entire field. Naturally, most pleasing to us was the professional recognition of the part FlRE ENGINEERING plays in it. This is a valuable asset, not only to us, but to our advertisers and readers.
