On Friday, December 7, the United States Senate approved an appropriations bill for the Department of Defense that included $20 billion in emergency money for the September 11 terrorist attacks and for preparedness for future attacks.
Included in this funding was $290 million for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Already funded at $150 million for FY 2001, this would be $290 million in additional funding for FY 2002.
When the House of Representatives approved their version of this bill in November, they did not include any funding for this program. There are many other differences between the House and Senate versions, so a conference committee, made up of members of each chamber, must meet to develop a compromise version.
