Albany, N. Y., Chief Rescues Blackbird

The humanitarian code of Chief Michael J. Fleming of Albany, N. Y., is that “anything or anyone suffering is worth while helping.” When a call was received to rescue a blackbird who had one foot imprisoned in part of a cornice at the Home for the Aged, he ordered truck company No. 3 to proceed to the rescue.

A ladder was raised and the fireman who liberated the bird, discovered that its foot was caught between two boards forming part of the cornice. The bird was not hurt for when he brought it back to the ground, the bird rested for a while in the fireman’s hand and then flew away.
