Alliance Chief 14 Years in Service
Chief John Held, of the Alliance, Ohio, fire department, has just complete 14 years’ service. Chief Held is known as “Fighting John” and his father before him, Edward Held, was an engineer on a famous New York steam engine in the days of the horse-drawn apparatus. Chief Held joined the Alliance department in April, 1910, as a substitute fireman, back in the days of the horse-drawn fire apparatus. In July, 1912, Chief Held was named captain and four years later won his chief’s bars. Under Chief Held’s regime, the Alliance fire department has made rapid strides. The department has been completely motorized with three stations in use. The department personnel has been increased from 14 to 22 men, working on a two-platoon basis.
