The new building ordinance recently adopted at Chicago is held to increase the necessity for immediate installation of the high-pressure water system. Several “fireproofed” wooden cars were burned in the New York city subway, owing to a collision in which several barrels of oil and, it is said, some dynamite exploded. The fire was fierce. The one steel car on the train withstood the flames; the fireproofed wooden cars were burned. The next day Fireman Little, while working on the debris, was instantly killed by the fall of a mass of rock from the roof which gave way when the wooden props were burned.
