Another Oil Drum Fire

Distillate vapors were ignited in an unsprinklered wooden shed at an oil reclaiming plant. Storage tanks ruptured, and burning oil spread to 3,000 drums of black oil stored in the congested yard. For three hours drums bombarded the area within a quarter-mile radius, killing one person and injuring 15 others. Damage was estimated at $150,000. Outside flammable liquid drum storage should be arranged in small, well-separated groups away from buildings, and protected by nearby hydrants.
