Former Chief Paul Pullar says it has a turning radius and outrigger system that allows it to negotiate in a village environment (i.e., narrow streets and tightly packed houses) as well as the more suburban and rural parts of the district. The aerial responds to structure fires, technical rescues, and public service calls.

• Gladiator LFD chassis with a 242½-inch wheelbase and a 10-inch raised-roof cab with seven seats and an EMS compartment;

• CUMMINS ISX 15 550-hp diesel engine;

• 103-foot aerial ladder with a -10° to 75° range, a 500-pound wet tipload, and a 14-foot outrigger spread;

• rescue rope roller assembly with a
500-pound lift;

• AKRON Stream Master appliance at aerial tip with three point controls (a tip, turntable, and remote control);

• ROM roll-up compartment doors and wheel well sleeves holding wheel chocks, spare SCBA cylinders, two extinguishers, and outrigger pads;

• 198 feet of ground ladders;

• PHYSIO CONTROL AED; and

Captain Mike Klusyk of Support Services says that the aerial is housed with a pumper and is used primarily in a truck company with firefighting capability. In the absence of the pumper, it can respond as an engine. The aerial also does technical rescue as a backup basic/advanced life support unit.

• Predator Severe Service XMFD chassis with a 176-inch tractor wheelbase and a six-seat cab with side storage compartments between the doors;

• 60.3-foot overall length;

• CUMMINS ISX 15 550-hp diesel engine;

• HALE DSD-150 single-stage, 1,500-gpm pump with a front bumper 1¾-inch line and two crosslays (one each 1¾-inch and 2½-inch);

• KME 350-gallon stainless-steel water tank;

• 101-foot aerial ladder with 500-pound tip load, a -7° to 80° elevation, a 14-foot outrigger spread, and an AKRON Stream Master XT Store Front ladderpipe on the retractable waterway;

The Cambridge (MA) Fire Department protects a district that sits at the end of the Massachusetts Turnpike and has a tunnel that prohibits hazardous cargo. Deputy Chief Gerard Mahoney says the department’s PIERCE pumper with foam system and large tank is used in one of two engine companies stationed along the truck route which bypasses this tunnel where hazardous materials can travel.
