Approve New Bessemer Water Rate Schedule
The hearing of the Bessemer, Ala., water rate controversy by the Alabama Public Service Commission resulted in the submission of a new schedule of rates to the city, which was approved by the commission’s engineer, the city’s, rate expert and the president of the company, John D. Weakley. The new water rate schedule is as follows: Flat rate, 10,000 gallons. 35 cents: 30,000. 25 cents; 100,000, 20 cents; 150,000 15 cents; 450,000 gallons, 8 cents. Meter rates, 5/8-meter and one connection, $2.70 per quarter; 5/8-inch more than one connection, $4,00 per quarter; 3/4-meter, $4.50 per quarter; 1-inch meter, $6 per quarter; 1 1/2-inch meter. $9 per quarter; 2-inch meter. $12.50 per quarter; 3-inch meter, $25 per quarter; 4-inch meter. $50 per quarter and 6-inch meter, $250 per quarter.
The maximum allowance of water begins at 10,000 gallons, whereas under the present contract a maximum of approximately 30 per cent, more is allowed.
The hearing of the Bessemer water rate controversy brings to a head an agitation of more than fifteen years’ standing. City officials, the commissioners and the management of the water works urge that Bessemer people acquaint themselves with the new schedule of rates before September 1 in order that they may be able to determine actually how the community will be affected by the new contract.
