Fire losses last August are estimated to be $43 million higher than those for the same month in 1973, or an increase of 19 percent to $264 million, according to the Insurance Services Office. The January through August losses also jumped 19 percent this year to $2.1 billion from $1.8 billion in 1973.

Fire in the United States caused an estimated loss of $221 million in August, an increase of some $37 million above the August 1972 total, the Insurance Services Office reported.

The August figures bring the estimated fire loss for the first eight months of 1973 to $1.8 billion, an increase of $178 million—about 11.0 percent—above the first eight months of 1972.
