Auto Flying Squadron of Brookline.
Details concerning the new “flying squadron” of automobile apparatus which is expected to greatly increase the efficiency of the Brookline, Mass., fire department are at hand. The machines will include a fast car of the roadster type for the use of the chief, and a high-powered car equiped as a combination chemical and hose wagon.
The chief’s car will carry four men, together with light equipment, consisting of a pony extinguisher, axe and lanterns and will, if necessary, get up a speed of fifty miles an hour. The combination car will be of 60horsepower, with a specially constructed chassis. It will have a 35-gal. chemical tank and 250 ft. of chemical hose, with space in the body for 1,000 ft. of water hose. This space may he used for seats for six men. in addition to the two on the front seats and two on the rear steps. Both cars will he fitted with electric side and tail lights, gas head lights and a 10-in. swinging search light on the dash hoard. Each machine will he fitted with a siren horn and the big car will carry a 10-in. locomotive hell. The cars will be fitted with tires of the ouick detachable type. Spare inflated tires will he carried, permitting of rapid changing in case of accident. The combination car will he fitted with a set of the largest tires in the world, made especially for the purpose and measuring 40×6 in. To reduce the chance of punctures to a minimum, however, both cars will be fitted with non-dcflatable inner tubes.
