Ban on Bonfires.
Police Commissioner Cropsey, of New York, has issued an order to the police requiring them to extinguish all election bonfires, holding that the custom among boys of kindling them is in violation of the law. Asphalt pavements especially will be kept free from fires. Macadam pavements do not suffer so much from the heat. Mayor Gaynor, in a letter a few days ago, seemed inclined to let the boys have their fun. The police commissioner orders the boys to refrain from tearing down billbords and stealing barrels and boxes for fuel.
