Battalion Chief McLoughlin, of New York, Badly Injured

At a fire in a six-story tenement in East Fourth street, New York City, Battalion Chief John McLoughlin was severely injured by the collapse of the stairway on the fourth floor, from which he was directing the work of his men. Chief McLoughlin felt the stairs tremble under him, but before he could direct his men to seek safety the stairway way way and precipitated him and five of his men to the third floor, buried in a mass of burning wreckage. Chief McLaughlin sustained serious injuries to his spine and a possible fracture of the skull, and is in a serious condition.
