Birthday Reflections

The Journal is a weekly paper devoted to the interests of the firemen and the fire departments of this country. Its aim will be to give all important news relating to, or of interest to the members of the fire departments in all sections.

With these words P. Y. Everett and Clifford Thomson, editors and publishers, launched the first issue of the National Fireman’s Journal on November 17, 1877. In the ensuing 85 years the title has changed several times to the present FIRE ENGINEERING, the publishing concept has been enlarged to include all members of the fire protection profession and the weekly paper has become a monthly magazine.

Yet throughout these years the principles outlined in the first Publishers Column have never changed. As we enter our 86th year, we again pledge our dedication to them in the interest of serving the field as the Journal of the Fire Protection Profession.

Birthday Reflections

On November 17, 1877, FIRE ENGINEERING, then known as the National Fireman’s Journal was first published. In the 81 years since that date, through the many changes to the present day, this publication has chronicled the significant events of each era as fully and faithfully as possible.

As we look back, this magazine over the years has played a part in practically everything of consequence concerning the fire service and has consistently promoted every worthwhile endeavor. We’re naturally very proud of our record and the standing we have achieved as the “Journal Of The Fire Protection Profession.”

However, as we celebrate our birthday we fully realize that our success is due solely to the acceptance which our readers have shown us. This has resulted in a cooperative effort to continually improve the quality of this publication and has enabled us to reach a peak position. At present we enjoy our largest circulation and a greater advertising volume than ever before.

This is also the Thanksgiving season — a traditional American holiday period when it is customary to pause and give thanks for the harvest of the year. As we enter our 82nd year we extend to each and all of you our greetings— with sincere thanks for your continued support.
