Bland Honored by SFPE

Richard E. Bland, associate professor, engineering research, The Pennsylvania State University and recent chairman of the President’s National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control, received the annual “Fire Protection Man of the Year Award” from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers at the society’s 24th annual meeting, May 22, in Miami Beach.

In presenting the award, SFPE President James W. Nolan commended Bland for his leadership as chairman of the commission which focused public attention on the problem of fire in the United States which annually takes 12,000 lives and causes billions of dollars of property loss. “The recommendations of the commission which emphasize prevention of fire through implementation of local programs and builtin fire safety measures to detect and extinguish fire before it grows large enough to cause a major disaster are particularly meaningful to the fire protection engineer,” Nolan said.
