Boarding House at Madison Burned

A large building occupied as a boarding house, located within the limits of Madison, Ill., which has a volunteer department, was partially destroyed by fire recently. The department at Granite City, nearby, sent a Waterous motor engine and firemen to Madison’s aid and the Granite City firemen did excellent work in rescue work and in extinguishing the flames. There was no hook and ladder truck and as there were no fire escapes on the building it was a difficult matter to reach the fourth floor but the Granite City firemen used a sixteen foot hook ladder as a pompier ladder and in that manner made several rescues, until the ladder was burned off beneath their feet.
