Bonded Warehouse Fire at Midway.

Bonded Warehouse Fire at Midway.

A fire believed to have been of incendiary origin, which raged nearly all one night at Midway, Ky., destroyed six large bonded warehouses of the Greenbaum distillery, containing 47,500 barrels of whisky, burned several negro cottages, the Southern railway trestle and two county bridges and threatened the northern part of the town of Midway. The actual property loss was at least $300,000, partly insured. The loss to the government in the destruction of whisky in bond, amounting to 2,300,000 gallons, will be heavy. The main distillery, the books and the superintendent’s residence were saved. Frankfort, Lexington and other towns were appealed to for help to fight the fire, but were unable to respond. The fire is believed to be of incendiary origin, as it started in two places at once. Sounds as of explosions were heard just before the alarm was given.
