Broken Main Flood Railroad Tubes

Broken Main Flood Railroad Tubes

A six inch main carrying water to the middle East Side section of New York City broke early one morning last week in 33rd. street near Fifth Avenue and before the water could be cut off at the Fifth Avenue water gate the pavement had caved in and two Long Island railroad tubes which run under 33rd. street were flooded. Traffic had to be switched to tunnels which follow the line of 32nd. street. The tubes were not cleared of the water until late in the afternoon.
