Checking Vamp’s Job Status
In Scotch Plains, N. J., Volunteer Fire Captain Alex Muir, Jr., is currently checking the outside job status of every member of the volunteer fire department in a township move to improve the efficiency of the firemen.
The survey was ordered by Fire Commissioner Gordon Erhlich, a town committeeman, following a report that the local volunteer force failed to answer an alarm in September at a nearby Country Club.
The report is expected to show at what hours the volunteer is available, as well as how close his job is located to Scotch Plains. The committeeman said he is determined to have the organization so set up so that a sufficient number of men will always be on hand for fire fighting, regardless of the hour.
There are 22 men and three officers on the Scotch Plains volunteer force, although ordinance allows as many as 25.
