Chicago Fire Veterans of 1871

Twenty-two of the thirty-seven surviving members of the Chicago fire department at the time of the conflagration of October 8-9, 1871, observed its anniversary with a dinner at the Great Northern Hotel on October 8, with a like number of guests, principally old firemen. Ex-Chief Engineer Matthias Benner, who was assistant chief at the time of the fire; John Campion, who was then assistant foreman of Engine Company No. 6; Professor J. P. Barrett of the fire alarm system, and ex-Battalion Chief Joseph Kenyon, were among those present.
