CHICAGO FIRES IN AUGUST.
Following are the statistics of the Chicago Fire Department for the month of August: Total number of alarms 65, and stills 41. The causes are as follows: Children with matches, 17; false, 16; sparks from chimney falling on roof, 8; chimney fires, 8; unknown, 6; communicated, 8; spontaneous combustion, 5; spark from tobacco pipe, 4; supposed incendiary, 3; smoking in bed, 2; sparks from locomotive, 2; carelessly dropping kerosene lamps, 2; defective chimney, 2; overheated brick kiln, 2; incendiary, 2; and one each, chips on ash pile, overheated feed pipe, children playing with fire, igniting of escaping gas, hostler dropping match among hay, ignition of ceiling from gas jet, ignition of toy balloon, match dropped into kerosene oil, stepping on match, falling of stove-pipe, defective range, mischievousness, maliciousness, explosion of kerosene lamp, hot flat iron, over heated bake oven, lamp too near bed quilt, ignition of window curtain from candle, smoky stove, explosion of oil stove, spark from tug boat, grease falling on embers, spark from smoke stack, overheated kiln, carelessness, overheated steam pipe, and rekindling. Of the buildings, 24 were brick, and 54 frame, and were occupied as follows: dwellings, 27 ; barns, 25; sheds, 5 ; straw pile, general occupancy, 4 each; saloon, 3; rubbish, 3; boarding house, 3; brick kiln, 2; marble works, 2 ; moulding manufactory, 2; safe manufactory, 2 ; organ manufactory, 2; marble mantle manufactory, 2; and one each, preserving works, hay stack, bakery, junk shop, grass, meat market, schooner, dry kiln, coal yard, hotel, stoops, mattress manufactory, picture frame manufactory, sidewalk, wool fibre mill, livery stable, packing house, tenement, furniture store, water tank, warehouse, icehouse and tug boat.
Total insurance involved, $130,525.00. Total loss $9,083.42. Total loss to insurance as far as settled, and partially agreed upon $6,501 42 There was an additional loss of about $1,000 at the Union Stock Yards outside of the city limits.
